FilmScout lets you follow the people who make films and see what they are releasing. To do that it keeps a small amount of information about you. This page says what, why, who else touches it, and how to have it removed. It is written to be read, not skimmed past.

What we keep
Your account
- Your email address. It is how you sign in and where the emails below go.
- A username, and if you add them, a name, a short bio and a photo.
- The country you pick for streaming availability, if you pick one.
- If you set a password, a one-way hash of it. We cannot read the password itself.
- If you sign in with Google, the identifier Google gives us for your account and the email address it shares. We receive nothing else from Google, and we never post to it.
- Sign-in codes we email you are stored hashed and deleted after thirty minutes.
- A record of each signed-in session: when it started, the IP address and the browser it came from, so you can see and end sessions.
What you do in the app
- Who and what you follow: filmmakers, titles, other people's lists, and other people.
- Your lists, the titles on them, and any notes you write on them.
- Whether you want the monthly email, and when we last sent it.
On your device
- One cookie, which keeps you signed in.
- Your browser's local storage remembers if you said "not now" to adding FilmScout to your home screen.
- The app caches poster images so pages open quickly. That cache holds no personal information.
There is no analytics script, no advertising, no tracking pixel and no third-party cookie anywhere in FilmScout.
Technical logs
Like every web server, ours records the pages requested and the IP addresses they came from. Those logs are rotated automatically and kept for a matter of days. The country hint your browser sends in its language setting is used to pick a default for streaming availability and is not stored unless you save a preference.
What we do with it
- Run the service: build your feed, keep your lists, answer your searches.
- Sign you in: emailed codes and password resets go to your address.
- Send one email a month with what the filmmakers you follow are releasing. It is on by default and off in one tap, from the email itself or in settings. It is never sent when there is nothing to say.
- Show your public profile: your username, name, bio, photo, the filmmakers and titles you follow, who you follow, who follows you, and your public lists. Lists you mark private are visible only to you; unlisted ones only to people with the link.
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising.
Who else handles it
A few services do specific jobs for us. Each sees only what its job needs.
- TMDB (The Movie Database) supplies everything FilmScout knows about films, series and the people who make them. When you search, the words you type are sent to TMDB. Nothing that identifies you goes with them. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
- JustWatch, through TMDB, supplies where a title can be streamed, rented or bought.
- Google, only if you choose to sign in with it.
- Resend delivers our email, so it handles your address and the email's content.
- Rollbar is told when something in FilmScout breaks, so that it gets fixed. A report carries what failed, the page it happened on, and the id and username of whoever ran into it. Not your email address, and your IP address only as far as the network it came from.
- Amazon Web Services stores profile photos and our database backups, in the United States.
- DigitalOcean hosts the application and its database, in New York.
Your information is processed in the United States. We will hand it over to nobody else unless the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Your account and what you have done in it: until you delete the account.
- Sessions: until you sign out, or end them from settings.
- Sign-in codes: thirty minutes.
- Backups of the database: sixty days, then they expire on their own.
- Server logs: days.
Your choices
- Change your name, bio, photo, country and email preference any time in settings.
- Stop the monthly email with the link at the bottom of any issue, or in settings.
- Delete your account: write to elioncho@gmail.com from the address on the account and we will remove it, with everything you followed and listed, within thirty days. Backups holding it expire within sixty more.
- Ask for a copy of what we hold about you, at the same address.
Age
FilmScout is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly keep information about them.
Changes
If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it. Anything that changes what we do with your information will also be said in the monthly email.
